Mis Perros

One thing I've been a little worried about is bringing the dogs to Mexico with us when we finally move. I've mentioned before that Chorney, our geriatric German Shepperd won't be around to make the trip. She's over 13 now.

Trap, the greyound, most likely will. He has just turned 5 in April and I hope he's around for a good long while. Elliott, who is our preadopted greyhound, is not yet one, and hasn't even started schooling for racing yet, so it will be a few years before he's ready to come home. Shorter if he's not a decent prospect. (Let's hope that's the case!!)

Anyway... I worry about the heat and how it will affect them. I see others have taken their dogs with no problem. Greyhounds however, have no isulating body fat and very little fur to protect them from the sun and heat.

If anyone has any experience with this, I'd sure love to know!!! Maybe I'll just have to make sure that they get their very own swimming pools!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA

Our dog is a black lab but has shorter or less hair than a typical lab. (He's probably some 3/4 lab and 1/4 hound mix or something). Anyway, he does fine here. He pants occasionally and we get him water when we take him to restaurants, but otherwise he does fine. We don't leave him outside, though, so I don't know how they'd fair if you're planning on that. Our dog lives inside with us and sleeps in the AC just like us so he has a chance to cool off.

Although Chorney loves to laze around outside, Trap is always in the house with us. Partly because greyhounds shouldn't be left outside int he heat or cold, but also because he chooses to be.

I'm sure he won't miss the Canadians winters though!! (And neither will I!)

Hi Beth,
We've got a rather long-ish haired dog who lives outside. She has lots of shady shelter and we refresh her water often. She doesn't complain, lol! Keep in mind that most houses here are made with tile floors that retain the cool, so doggies are quite comfortable chilling out on the tiles, even without AC. We do let Lola in if it's ridiculously hot, (or raining of course), but she seems to live quite a happy life outdoors. We shave her every 6 weeks or so, that helps with the heat and with the ticks. Ticks are a big problem around here, if we are a few days late on the Frontline treatments, we can see the results immediately, big blood sucking "garrapatas" on my baby's neck.

So, shelter, water and the option of indoors and they should do just fine.
